next up on bucharest’s raw tools label is börft co-founder, johan sturesson, also known to be part of the swedish electronic trio, frak. the four-track ep consists in music from the private vaults of the producer, that has been kept secret for almost 20 years. rough and gritty, his analogue approach and stripped down sound define the record. starting with the rave sounding “uncle owl” and then moving to a more darkly atmospheric title track, kord shows his muscles on the flipside with some more techno infused and bass driven dancefloor cuts.
always under the radar, johan has been operating raw electronics since the late 80’s, developing his distinctive sound. as kord, he has released on several swedish labels, including his own imprint. together with jan svensson and björn isgren as frak, they have released music on labels such as kontra musik, lux rec and midlight records.

hot off a couple of 12” from topher horn, rocksteady disco follows up with its first compilation featuring a heap of heavily sampled originals from more well-known editors. pontchartrain leads the release off with a summer-inspired aural prozac number, just in time for this june release. next up is notorious detroit editor lafleur, busting out this original milky-smooth detroit boogie house production. a slight little rearrangement from rocksteady disco label boss peter croce makes this one a bit smoother for the djs. lyon, france’s g2s kicks off the flip with a big-bottomed stomper reminiscent of some mcde ‘raw cuts’. pontchartrain book-ends this release with a track that puts the ‘rocksteady’ in rocksteady disco, with heavy analog-meets-electro drum programming and complete with pontchartrain on vocoder duties. hand numbered edition of 500 copies with dl code.

stuttgarts motor city drum ensemble (aka danillo plessow aka inverse cinematics),presents a superb ep of deep house taking its cues from berlin and detroit. 2008 was a great year for motor city drum ensemble releasing parts one and two of the highly acclaimed raw cuts series which featured heavily in many best of 2008 house music charts. he finished the year with an excellent resident advisor podcast and a set at the resident advisor christmas party. his ‘get slapped up’ release on compost black and ‘breath control’ release on his own four roses label have been in the boxes of taste maker djs and seen him become an in demand producer. danillo is also a part of the inverse cinematics production team who have released on pulver, fuid ounce showcasing his more jazzy, broken beat production style. this debut 2020 release features three superb tracks that take their inspiration from the likes of theo parrish and carl craig as well as the deep house sound of berlin, yet retain the signature mcde sound.

cadenza music opens up its 2016 account with the debut single from swiss producers, rare movement feat. disco channel. cutting their teeth on the dj circuit for many years, and playing alongside such esteemed jocks as seth troxler, ricardo villalobos (who mastered the audio on these tracks), jamie jones and luciano (who ultimately signed this single to cadenza), the guys have crafted a pair of tracks that sit right in the dj sets of the aforementioned company. rare 007 combines tension building synths and a wandering bassline, wrapped up tight in solid drum groove, its hypnotizing tones carving out a most useful club tool. on the flip side, rare 011 digs deeper, with cinematic string sweeps over the sparse and bass heavy kick drum. flashes of vocal refrains and micro percussion fly in and out of the arrangement as the melodic elements give this one a real sense of drama as the track blossoms into life. a very accomplished debut from the guys will no doubt provide a real dancefloor moment in the right setting, and no surprise that villalobos gave these tracks the audio master that they deserve.

after recording various psych soul and funk tracks on the whiz record label the real thing carried on after leaving the label to record more studio cuts with musician and producer stu gardner. here they let it rip with an incredible fast version of james browns *give it up, turnit loose* ... and they left in that all important secret ingredient of a lovely long drum break. stu gardner himself took to the microphone on this track, with various background vocals and screams, and did the vocals for the amazing b-side *it s a family thang*!
